White House Highlights Role of Our Health Data Cooperative in

New patient owned cooperative announced to help citizens take ownership of their health data.

Our Health Data Cooperative (OHDC) responds to the Obama Administration's call to harness the power of Big Data in Health, to help lower health costs and improve patient care for people in all areas of the country.

OHDC's project to develop the largest data set of anonymous health records for clinical research in the world was highlighted by the Obama Administration as a high-impact collaboration promoting "Data to Knowledge to Action." OHDC is working with Touchstone Energy Cooperatives, The School of Information and Library Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the Center for the Advancement of Health Information Technology at RTI International (UNC/RTI). The goal is to include 50 million member patient health records.

OHDC is a new cooperative, owned by the patient, developed to help patients better manage and benefit directly from the use of their health data while providing it anonymously for clinical research uses.

Membership in OHDC is free and open to all United States residents who may sign up at http://www.ourhdc.com.

Health data from patients participating in the cooperative will be collected anonymously using their OHDC Stock Number. All collected data will be aggregated to help health researchers and clinicians; fees paid to OHDC and knowledge gained by subscribing health organizations for access and use of the data will be shared among the patient shareholders.

"Our Health Data Cooperative is built on the premise that Patients should benefit economically from access by third parties to their health information. Ownership by Patients of this Big Data Warehouse will drive quicker dissemination of important treatment information to patients looking for the best healthcare," said Patrick Grant, Chairman of OHDC.

The School of Information and Library Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the Center for the Advancement of Health Information Technology at RTI are collaborating with ODHC to help build and design the database access as well as the evidence-based educational infrastructure for members that will help them understand the research uses of their data.

ODHC is also collaborating with Touchstone Energy Cooperative to enlist its more than 30 million existing members. Funding of up to $12 Million is being planned to support the effort and enrollment is open to all US residents with a goal to have 10 Million members enrolled in the next twenty-four months.

Our Health Data Cooperative is a national patient owned cooperative that is committed to lowering the cost of health care for the United States and improving the health care for disparate patient groups by gathering health related data anonymously for each member via their individual cooperative stock number. This allows the data to stay in the patient's doctor's office. Individual membership is open to all US residents and there is no out of pocket cost to join. Sign-up is available at http://www.ourhdc.com
