Vancouver Toenail Fungus Treatment Specialist
My mission is to provide comprehensive, state of the art medical treatment of the foot and ankle in a compassionate, professional environment.
Vancouver (I-Newswire) September 19, 2013 - Dr. Tammy Gracen, podiatrist serving the greater Vancouver area since 1990, including surrounding areas Tsawwassen, Delta, Richmond, Surrey, White Rock, Ladner, Burnaby and Langley, is one of the first podiatrists in Canada to use the GenesisPlus laser for treating toenail fungus since the technology was approved by Health Canada.
"Toenail fungus, or onychomycosis is more than an aesthetic issue," says Dr. Tammy Gracen. "Aside from the embarrassing discolouration, thickening and odor of the nail, toenail fungus can be painful, causing irritation, pressure and burning. This can lead to decreased activity and limit shoe wear choices. As well, people who are immune compromised, such as those suffering from diabetes are at higher risk for developing secondary bacterial infections."
Toenail fungus is a common issue. Approximately 10 percent of the population has it, and for those 50 or older, the chance of getting toenail fungus increases to 30 percent. Laser treatment for onychomycosis is safer than oral treatment and will get rid of molds which don't respond well to the oral antifungals. Topical treatment by itself is unlikely to cure the infection.
"My patients, whether they are from Vancouver, Richmond, Burnaby or New Westminster," says Dr. Tammy Gracen, "are looking for a safer alternative to the oral antifungals and a more effective treatment than with the topical antifungals. That is why I am now offering laser nail treatment with GenesisPlus."
There are other laser treatments, such as the PinPointe Foot Laser, but the GenesisPlus has a better depth of penetration due to it's larger spot size so treatment takes less time. As well, the handpiece provides real-time temperature feedback and a visible aiming beam to ensure the affected area is being treated safely and effectively.
The laser treats toenail fungus by penetrating the toenail and killing the fungus with the laser's heat. Ideally, all 10 toenails should be treated at the same time to minimize the chance of re-infection. The entire procedure lasts about 30 minutes, but the nails won't be cleared immediately. They will clear as the damaged, previously infected nails grow out and are replaced by healthy toenails.
"My patients really appreciate the laser because it is fast and effective. The fact that there is no recovery time (patients walk in and walk out) makes it ideal for busy, active individuals," Dr. Tammy Gracen explains.
