Most end users of treated wood products don't realize how many different treatment options are available. Treated wood is just treated wood to most weekend warriors. It's all the same as far as they are concerned and there is little to no consideration given to the chemicals used in the lumber they build with. Some contractors don't even think much about it. With that in mind, Building Products Plus created the "Treated Wood Options" infographic.
MCA, CCA, and CA are all chemicals used in treated wood intended for projects outdoors, even for marine or shoreline projects such as bulkheads, docks, or piers. Many people still consider CCA (Chromated Copper Arsenate) to be the best all-time wood treatment. Being introduced in the 1940's, it certainly had time to prove itself. They are all widely appreciated as effective treatments, though.
Creosote and borates were included because, although they are less well known these days, they are still commonly used or requested. Eric Lincoln, the Sales Manager at Building Products Plus, says, "a lot of people, especially older folks, call asking for 'creosote' poles but most of the time they just mean 'treated' poles. We do sell creosote poles, though." Borate chemicals are only used for interior use, mostly for framing lumber because it protects against fungus and termites. The average end user will almost never need borate or creosote treated wood, though.
