Surgeons at Samra Plastic Surgery Perform Hand Surgery Procedures in NJ

Hand surgery procedures are usually performed to repair injured hands. These include injuries to the tendons, nerves, blood vessels, joints, as well as fractured bones, burns, cuts, and skin wounds. Modern techniques have greatly improved the surgeon's ability to restore function and appearance, even in severe injuries. Among the techniques now used by hand surgeons are: Grafting, Flap surgery and Replantation or transplantation.

Statistics released by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) indicate that reconstructive plastic surgery procedures increased 1 percent in 2012. Hand surgery was one among the top five reconstructive procedures with 123,000 procedures performed, up 3 percent over 2011.

Some injuries may require several operations over an extended period of time. In many cases, surgery can restore a significant degree of feeling and function to injured hands, however, recovery may take months, and a period of hand therapy will most often be needed. Hand surgeons can treat the following conditions.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) is a medical condition that causes numbness, pain, and discomfort in the hand, afflicting an estimated 75 million people globally. Treatments for CTS are generally successful, but early diagnosis is important.

Endoscopic Carpal Tunnel Release (ECTR) surgery is a minimally invasive procedure used for treating carpal tunnel syndrome. Endoscopic Surgery is highly effective and has been used for more than 20 years. It results in less post-operative pain, a minimal scar concealed by a wrist crease, and generally allows patients to resume some normal activities in a short period of time.

Congetinal Defects
Congenital deformities of the hand - that is, deformities a child is born with - can interfere with proper hand growth and cause significant problems in the use of the hand. Fortunately, with modern surgical techniques, most defects can be corrected at a very early age - in some cases during infancy, in others, at two or three years - allowing normal development and functioning of the hand.

Dupuytren's Contracture
Dupuytren's contracture is a disorder of the skin and underlying tissue on the palm side of the hand. Thick, scar-like tissue forms under the skin of the palm and may extend into the fingers, pulling them toward the palm and restricting motion. Surgery is the only treatment for Dupuytren's contracture.

Rheumatoid Arthritis
Rheumatoid arthritis, an inflammation of the joints, is a disabling disease that can affect the appearance and the function of the hands and other parts of the body. Disabilities caused by rheumatoid arthritis can often be managed without surgery - for example, by wearing special splints or using hand therapy to strengthen weakened areas. For some patients, however, surgery offers the best solution.

Arthritis of the first carpometacarpal (CMC) joint of the hand is a common and often debilitating disease. Although procedures vary on a case by case basis, Dr. Salem Samra prefers the mini tightrope CMC technique. The Mini TightRope provides a unique method for stabilization of the thumb metacarpal following trapezial resection or removal for the treatment of CMC arthritis.
