Stony Brook's Dr. Mark Epstein Now Offering Allergan Natrelle® 410 Breast Implants

Long Island plastic surgeon Dr. Mark D. Epstein speaks on the FDA's approval of these "gummy bear" implants and their addition to his practice.

Though they have been a popular choice in Europe and Canada since the early 1990s, cohesive silicone gel breast implants - commonly referred to as "gummy bear" implants - are finally making their way into the United States. Long Island plastic surgeon Dr. Mark D. Epstein sat down to discuss the FDA's recent approval of Allergan Natrelle 410 breast implants, the gold standard of "gummy bear" implants.

"While Natrelle 410 shaped gel implants have been used for years in other countries, their recent FDA approval marks the first time we are able to use them in the United States," Dr. Epstein explains. "The unique design of the Natrelle 410 offers a number of different advantages for women, and provides a much-needed new option for those who are unhappy with the size or shape of their breasts."

"What sets Natrelle 410 breast implants apart from other silicone implants is that is designed with a more natural appearance in mind," Dr. Epstein offers. "Breast implants typically have a round shape, leaving some women wishing for a more natural-looking option. Natrelle 410 implants have a teardrop shape, more closely matching that of a woman's natural breasts." Dr. Epstein went on to explain that "gummy bear" implants are named so due to the jelly-like feel of the implant.

Asked to explain the patient-side benefits of Natrelle 410 implants, Dr. Epstein explained, "The reason so many patients are drawn to cohesive silicone gel implants is the ability to hold their shape over time. The gel in Natrelle 410 implants is designed to stay in place, even in cases where the implant is ruptured. Additionally, there is a very low risk for rippling - less than 1% in 7 years. Coupled with their natural appearance, they present an attractive option to women who may have written off breast augmentation."

When asked to comment on what the addition of Allergan Natrelle 410 implants means for his practice, Dr. Epstein had this to offer: "Natrelle 410 cohesive gel breast implants have proven over time to be a safe and effective option for women seeking a breast augmentation. I'm excited to offer them at my practice and hope that any interested women will seek a consultation."
