Cuden attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison from 1973-1976 and the University of Southern California from 1976-1978, from where he graduated with a B.A. in Theater. Upon graduation from USC, Steve became the USC School of Theater's Master Electrician. Cuden received an MFA in Screenwriting from UCLA's School of Theater, Film, and Television in 2010. He began teaching Screenwriting at Point Park University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 2011.
Steve co-created the hit Broadway and international musical, Jekyll & Hyde, writing the show's original Book and Lyrics with noted composer, Frank Wildhorn. For Jekyll & Hyde, Steve co-wrote lyrics for such songs as "Once Upon a Dream," "Murder, Murder," "His Work and Nothing More," and "Alive." Jekyll & Hyde played from 1997-2001 at the Plymouth Theater on Broadway, and opened its first Broadway revival at the Marquis Theatre in April 2013. The show has been performed throughout the U.S. by hundreds of theater companies, large and small, and having been translated into more than twenty languages, has been produced in numerous venues the world over. Steve and Frank also co-conceived the international hit musical, "Rudolf, Affaire Mayerling," which has been produced on stages in Hungary, Vienna, and Japan.
Steve is the author of, "Beating Broadway: How to Create Stories for Musicals That Get Standing Ovations," which is a step-by-step guide to how stories for musicals are created and developed. Included in the book are 40 popular musicals broken into narrative beats and plot points making it easier to see how such successful musicals are structured. Steve directed and co-produced the cult-favorite horror-comedy movie, Lucky, for which he won the award for Best Director at the Nodance Film Festival. Lucky also won the awards for Best Feature at The New York City Horror Film Festival, AKA Shriekfest in L.A., MicroCineFest in Baltimore, and the Weekend of Fear in Nuremberg, Germany.
"Steve Cuden is a wizard at analyzing musicals... He certainly knows the territory." -- Peter Filchia, Filichia
"...the genius in this manual is the second half, in which Cuden creates an impressive breakdown of 35 stage musicals and movie musicals into scene-by-scene synopses, highlighting the places in each where they manifest the seven plot points. Not only useful to libretto writers, this detailed treatment will also appeal to general Broadway fans as a behind-the-scenes look at how the stories they love were built. Broadway hopefuls and admirers will enjoy this reverse engineering of the genre's great successes." -- KIRKUS REVIEWS
Steve has written nearly ninety teleplays for familiar animated TV shows such as: X-Men, The Batman, Iron Man, Xiaolin Showdown, Loonatics Unleashed, World of Quest, The Mask, Goof Troop, Bonkers, Quack Pack, Gargoyles, Beetlejuice, Savage Dragon, Pink Panther, RoboCop, Extreme Ghostbusters, Stargate Infinity, ExoSquad, Mummies Alive, and numerous others.
