Something Beautiful Is Happening!

The annual Movement Day Conference in New York City incorporated creativity into the worship and included a prominent track entitled, "Artists in Community: Something Beautiful is Happening!"

The development and introduction of this track is considered a breakthrough by New York's Christian leaders, because so many of the creative minds of the city have felt overlooked for years, Filled with originality, inspiration and credibility, the track was designed to encourage participants to find unity in in their separate areas of Christian artistry and its advancement in New York and other urban cities.

Movement Day has become one of the fastest growing and most influential gatherings of urban ministry leaders in the United States. Last October, the fourth Movement Day was hosted by Dr. Mac Pier, CEO of The New York City Leadership Center , in collaboration with Redeemer City To City and co-hosted by American Bible Society. This major event attracted 1,400 of the nation's most distinguished leaders who are passionate about affecting city transformation through Gospel Movements.

"The arts are enormously important in shaping cites and culture. We want Christian leaders to be thinking critically and connecting strategically around their passions for the Arts. We included praise dancers from Crossroads Tabernacle as well as adding a new track for this very purpose. We were also blessed to have dramatic performances incorporated by Bruce Kuhn, an original cast member in Broadway's Les Miserables. Everyone brought a beautiful focus upon Christian arts" — Dr. Mac Pier

Recognizing a need for Christian artists to be involved in citywide Gospel Movements, the NYCLC team encouraged the development of the Artists in Community track by leaders within The Navigators ministry.

Artists are modern day prophets and poets who hold in their hands and hearts a precious gift from our Creator. Artists attending the track were empowered to live out their passion for the expansion of the kingdom. With a message to share through their stories, paintings, dances, music, etc., the leaders of the track acknowledged the reality that society is not always working towards the same vision, and offered insights on imparting light and hope to a secular culture.

The core team to design track program included world-renowned leaders such as the owner of Rollins Cole, Mackenzie Rollins; author and senior advisor for The Navigators, Donald McGilchrist; co-director of Via Affimativa, Dr. Kyle Gregory; and artist, psychotherapist, and public art administrator, Laurel Justice. Together, they developed an inspiring program which encouraged the 60-plus participants to collaborate with other Christian artists for the cultural transformation of their cities.

"The character and experience possessed by each panelist was absolutely brilliant," one participant remarked. "Being exceptional artists who make their livings from their crafts, it was tremendous to see that each loves Jesus passionately, and to learn that each has personally wrestled with the issues presented in the track."

Equally significant was the feedback given by other participants, "Thank you for everything. It was such a blessing this weekend to fellowship with you and our fellow artists. I am leaving refreshed and renewed in my concept of beauty and art."

Participants left with more than heightened inspiration to transform art. They left with heightened inspiration to transform souls with their artistry. Beauty, creativity, and artistic community were fostered in this track, as a way of transforming the artistic culture of cities for Christ's sake.
