Red Flannel Cat Formula Cat Food Recall

Online, January 26, 2014 (Newswire.com) - PMI Nutrition, LLC has issued a voluntary recall on its 20-lb. bags of Red Flannel Cat Formula cat food. Possible contamination with Salmonella was the reason cited in an announcement issued by the United States FDA. The announcement came down on Saturday. No reports of death or illness have been reported as of now.

The recall was issued as an act of caution after the possibility of contamination was uncovered during a routine FDA test. Salmonella can have an adverse affect on animals that eat the products. There is also significant risk to humans who handle product contaminated with it.

Healthy people who have been infected with the Salmonella bacteria may experience some or all of these symptoms: nausea and vomiting, diarrhea or blood in stool, abdominal cramps and fever. Salmonella can also result in more serious medical complications such as endocrinitis, arterial infections, muscle pain, eye irritation, and inflammations of the urinary tract. Consumers who have handled this product and are showing any of the previously mentioned symptoms should contact their primary healthcare providers immediately.

Salmonella infections in pets may be evidenced by lethargy, diarrhea or bloody stool, vomiting or fever, or any combination of these symptoms. Some pets will only have a decreased appetite, fever or abdominal discomfort. Infected pets pets can carry the infection to other pets or humans. If your pet has consumed Red Flannel Cat Formula Cat Food and has any of these symptoms, you are urged to immediately contact your veterinarian.

Red Flannel Cat Food is manufactured for PMI by a third-party. The affected product was sold in the following states: Alabama, Iowa, Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, Maryland, Mississippi, Minnesota, New Jersey, North Carolina, North Dakota, New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Tennessee, South Carolina, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia and Wisconsin.

The lot number on the affected product is 096 13 SM L2 1A. The best by date is 05 06 14. The product UPC code is 7 42869 00058 5. The lot number is visible on the lower back of the bag, right-hand side in a white box. The lot number will have a time stamp printed jut before (eg. 13:09).

Consumers are urged to discontinue use of the affected product, avoid contact with with bare hands and wash hands thoroughly if the product is touched.
