KBE Building Corporation's "50 Ways to Make a Difference" Donates $1500 to Residential Treatment Program for Homeless Veterans
Staff from KBE Building Corporation recently helped homeless veterans at The Baltimore Station, a residential treatment facility where homeless and addicted military veterans are turning their lives around, by donating $1,500 to the organization.
Online, December 24, 2013 (Newswire.com) - Staff from KBE Building Corporation recently helped homeless veterans at The Baltimore Station (www.baltimorestation.org) by donating $1,500 to the organization. The Baltimore Station is a residential treatment facility where homeless and addicted military veterans are turning their lives around.
KBE learned about The Baltimore Station through Matt Eversmann, a dedicated supporter of the organization who speaks passionately about its work. Now a retired Infantry Company First Sergeant, Eversmann is a former Army Ranger immortalized in the film Black Hawk Down.
"Veterans who have lost their way find hope and purpose at The Baltimore Station. Through the innovative program, they re-engage with the discipline and work ethic that made them successful servicemen, and we're pleased to support their mission," said Mike Kolakowski, President and CEO of KBE.
Since 1987, The Baltimore Station has taken on the challenge of assisting men - primarily veterans - who are homeless due to substance abuse. The administrative and program staff strive to treat all Baltimore Station residents with the respect and consideration deserved by soldiers who have honorably served their country.
"Here, we take the men back to a time and environment where they were successful - their time in the military," said Michael Seipp, Executive Director, The Baltimore Station. "The debilitating aspects of post-traumatic stress disorder build up over time. These vets may have been fine when they first came home, but as they get further away from their time served, the consequences pile up. One day, they realize they've lost everything. That's when The Baltimore Station can help them start rebuilding their lives."
The atmosphere at The Baltimore Station is similar to a military barracks: disciplined and intensely focused. Lights go on for the residents at 5:30 a.m., with chores and therapeutic sessions scheduled throughout the day. All of the case managers are graduates of the program and therefore represent recovery every day to the residents. "They know exactly how the current residents are feeling and understand what they are going through," Seipp said. "Their military service is a shared experience that gives them a common ground of respect."
KBE's gift to The Baltimore Station will support the residential and treatment services needed for the 136-bed facilities. Seipp said the need continues to grow as more soldiers are completing multiple combat missions in Iraq and Afghanistan. KBE's 50 Ways to Make a Difference
The Baltimore Station is the latest beneficiary of KBE's 50 Ways to Make a Difference initiative, which launched in 2009 to celebrate KBE's 50th anniversary and is now an annual, year-long outreach program that supports communities where KBE employees work and live.
The 50 Ways to Make a Difference program focuses on providing charitable support for veterans, children, and seniors in communities throughout Connecticut and Maryland, where KBE has regional offices. Since 2009, KBE has donated thousands of dollars and more than 5,000 hours of volunteer time to help those in need. This year, the program is focused exclusively on helping military veterans.
