John-Russell Thornburg To Receive Sam Houston Area Council Eagle Scout Project Award

Houston Area Eagle Scout Association Will Present Eagle Scout Project Award to John-Russell Thornburg at Eagle Scout Gathering On April 30, 2011 at 1:00 p.m.

Eagle Scout John-Russell Thornburg, 18, has been chosen as the Sam Houston Area Council recipient of the Glenn A. and Melinda W. Adams Eagle Scout Project of the Year Award. The Adams Award is an honor reserved for only one Eagle Scout annually in each Boy Scout area council. John-Russell Thornburg will be presented with the award by the Eagle Scout Association of the Sam Houston Area Council at its annual Eagle Scout Gathering, April 30, 2011. As the Sam Houston Area Council recipient, Thornburg will be in consideration for the Adams National Eagle Scout Project Award.

Thornburg's Eagle Scout Project built a 280-foot fence for the protection of children at Woodland Hills Elementary School in the Humble Independent School District. The project was done with the approval of school principal Pat Buttermore. He is a member of Troop 1377, chartered by Kingwood United Methodist Church in Kingwood, Texas.

"John-Russell led his fellow Scouts in a project of lasting benefit to the community, truly a fulfillment of the Scout Oath, which teaches us to help other people at all times. Our adult leaders share pride in his accomplishment, and all the youth who helped on the project, for contributing to a better society through Scouting," said Stephen Kelly, scoutmaster of Troop 1377.

On the final path to Eagle, each Scout completes a Leadership Service Project. The rules focus on leading others in the completion of a significant project, along with keeping detailed time and materials records. The resulting work must serve an organization other than the Boy Scouts of America, and be specifically approved in writing by the recipient organization and Scout leaders. After completion, and following a thorough project report, it can then be submitted for consideration in the Adams Award competition.

Counting John-Russell's own time and the time spent by others, 467.5 volunteer hours were devoted to this award-winning project. He planned, secured approvals and donations, and supervised the building of the wooden picket fence to increase the safety and clarify the boundaries of a playground at Woodland Hills Elementary School in Humble ISD. Including this Eagle Scout Project, there were 1,037 Houston area Eagle Scout projects completed in 2010, totaling 162,943 hours of service.

Thornburg and the entire Marvin Kiel Eagle Scout Class of 2010 in the Sam Houston Area Council, will be honored at a forthcoming event. This Eagle Scout Class namesake is Marvin Kiel, long time Boy Scout volunteer in the Sam Houston Area Council. The 2010 Class includes those whose official board of review was completed between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31, 2010. This Eagle Scout Gathering is sponsored by the Eagle Scout Association of the Sam Houston Area Council and will take place Saturday, Apr. 30, 2011, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Berry Center, 8877 Barker-Cypress Road, Cypress, Texas 77433. With the theme, "Rising Stars Among Us," the Marvin Kiel Eagle Scout Class of 2010 will gather with Eagles from all prior years for networking, mentoring, and continuing their support of Scouting.
