Hoag Orthopedic Institute Launches 'Own The Bone® Program' to Enhance Patient Care Following Osteoporosis-Related Fragility Fractures

Hoag Orthopedic Institute announced its implementation of the AOA's Own the Bone® Program, a system aimed at better identifying, evaluating and treating patients that suffer from an osteoporosis or low bone density-related fragility fracture.

Los Alamitos (I-Newswire) October 28, 2013 - Hoag Orthopedic Institute (HOI) announced today that it has implemented the American Orthopaedic Association's Own the Bone® Program, a system aimed at better identifying, evaluating and treating patients that suffer from an osteoporosis or low bone density-related fragility fracture (broken bones that result from a fall from standing height or less).

According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF), up to 50% of all women and 25% of men over the age of 50 years will sustain fragility fractures in their lifetime. The American Bone Health Prevalence Report states that more people in the United States suffer a fragility fracture each year than are diagnosed with a heart attack (MI), stroke or breast cancer combined, and the number is projected to significantly increase as the population ages. Additionally, studies show that patients who have had a fragility fracture are 2 to 4 times more likely to experience another fracture than those who have never had a fracture.

"We are all very excited to be bringing this multi-specialty program to our patients here at Hoag Orthopedic Institute," said Marisa Swain, a clinical nurse specialist responsible for overseeing the program at HOI. "'Own the Bone' will prove to be an essential tool in helping to reduce fragility fractures in our community."

According to the National Committee for Quality Assurance, only 1 in 5 Medicare patients have received the osteoporosis care they needed after a fracture. The Own the Bone Program is a national, web-based quality improvement registry that incorporates 10 measures for reducing future fractures to help ensure those needs continue to be met and benchmarked.

"Every decision we make at HOI has our patients in mind," said Dereesa Reid, CEO of Hoag Orthopedic Institute. "We are confident that this tried-and-true system will effectively complement our patient-focused approach to the prevention and treatment of orthopedic-related injuries."
