Harford County's Title 1 Office Increases Student Success with Educate Online
Students in personalized tutoring program achieve significant academic gains

January 28, 2014 - Baltimore, MD - For the second year in a row, Harford County's Title 1 Office has turned to Educate Online to help students who are struggling academically. The program focuses on building the critical math and reading skills needed for long-term success.

Harford County's Title 1 Office engaged with Educate Online to design a flexible online academic intervention program for K-5 students in their district. It was important that the program accommodate the parents' requests of an in-home program. To help build academic outcomes, Educate Online provided competency-based, one-on-one online tutoring to the students. Because tutoring takes place online, from home, schedules were designed to be convenient not just for the student but for the parents. The tutoring sessions could be scheduled in the evening or on weekends.

Students participated in an average of 22 one-hour sessions. In this short amount of time students were able to achieve significant increases in grade level equivalencies (GLE). In reading, students gained 1.38 GLE and in math students gained 1.65 GLE.

"Educate Online's unique delivery model provides students access to intervention in both reading and math at their appropriate level", said Jake Little, coordinator of Title 1 services and parent involvement at Harford County Public Schools. "This extra support allows participants to close skill gaps that would otherwise hinder them back in the regular classrooms."

Educate Online first assesses each student to understand where individual skill gaps exist; the Educate Online education team then develops personalized learning plans for each learner. Students meet one-on-one for live, online tutoring sessions with a teacher from Educate Online's extensive network of certified instructors.

"The key to the success of our program is that it is highly personalized. We identify the specific skill gaps in each student and then work individually with them to build mastery of concepts that had previously been holding the student back, said Chris Wheedleton, Senior Vice President of Business Development, Educate Online. "By focusing on the individual student success, we are ultimately helping the administrators meet their school-wide success goals."
