While for most of the country, the clean up from the devastating effects of Superstorm Sandy are over, there are still many places feeling the effects. In places such as New York City, top destinations remain closed in the wake of the storm as clean up and repairs continue.

Hurricane Sandy was the most destructive storm of the 2012 season due to its longevity and strength and as the clouds lifted, top areas along the eastern coast of the U.S. found themselves flooded and damaged. Places even as large as New York City were not immune to its power and some of the U.S. most well known, iconic and popular sites found themselves closed for repairs. Now, some 5 months since the storm, some are still working to repair the damage.

Sites and locations including the Seaport Historic District, Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty were just a few of the many destinations closed and even still closed today. Thanks to the hard work of the many employees dedicated to repairing and reopening these sites, the news that millions have been waiting for has arrived as re-openings continue. The most recent of these updates to arrive is the news that the Statue of Liberty will finally be reopened to the public on July 4th 2013.

While the structure of the Statue of Liberty had not been damaged by the storm, many of the structures on the island itself including docks which are imperative for visitation had been. Since the storm, crews have been working to repair the damage to the island and reopen these important historical sites. For millions, last year marked the end of a year long wait to see the statue as she had already been closed for over a year for repairs. When the storm hit, the crown of the Statue of Liberty had only been open to the public for one day.

The Statue of Liberty welcomes millions of visitors each year. Thanks to the hard work and dedication, millions more can look forward to once again visiting this historic icon as well as Ellis Island and the Seaport District of New York City.
