Former Temple Basketball Legend and Hall of Fame Coach, John Chaney to Be Featured in Upcoming Documentary 'Wise Old Owl'

In early February 2014, principal shooting will begin on a documentary about former Temple basketball coach, John Chaney. One of the most successful basketball coaches in NCAA history, Chaney was the first African-American basketball coach to win 700 games.

After winning a national championship at Division II Cheyney University, Chaney moved on to Division I Temple in Philadelphia.Chaney built a reputation as a tough coach who always demanded excellence on and off the court. He was well known for his match-up zone defense, tough non-conference scheduling, and winning basketball teams. Chaney won a total of 741 career games. He took Temple to the NCAA tournament 17 times. His 1987-88 Owls team entered the NCAA tournament ranked #1 in the country, and he reached the Elite Eight on five different occasions.

The documentary will chronicle Chaney's long and at times, controversial coaching career from his famed 6am practices, to him threating to kill then UMass coach John Calipari and the father like love he has for players that continues even until today.

The documentary will be directed by LaMont Ferrell and produced through his company, Just Jokes Entertainment. Ferrell has a long history in TV, having written and produced over a dozen sitcoms including, Girlfriends, House of Payne and Let's Stay Together. Before taking his talents to Hollywood, Ferrell attended Temple University on a basketball scholarship and played for Chaney.
