Occupy Wall Street-inspired protest focuses on attracting religions and consumers into economic imbalance debate.

San Francisco, CA (I-Newswire) October 19, 2011 - The Occupy Wall Street protests sprouting up around the United States have inspired a more specific, timely protest against capitalism during the holiday season.

According to its Facebook page, Christmas NOT Capitalists claims it "is a movement intended to remind everyone that Christmas is not about spending money, borrowing, debt, usury and guilt."

The leaderless group encourages those who normally celebrate holidays by shopping to consider other ways to personally express gratitude and giving.

"The fact that Christmas has turned into an event where people trade polyvinyl-chloride cards with imaginary value, so they can patronize the corporations that issued them is a sad reflection of what we've become" said John Q. Public, activist for San Francisco's TV Pirates - an unofficial spokesperson for the effort. "Some of the biggest hypocrites on the matter are these part-time Christians who think they can buy back their souls each Christmas with shiny gifts bought in debt."

Local religious leaders have largely ignored the growing protests against the financial system, despite religion's longstanding opposition to usury and taking advantage of those less fortunate. Christmas NOT Capitalists advances the discussion to include a genuine debate about the vices and virtues of capitalism around the holidays, and holds religious leaders accountable for their roles in the collapsing economies.
