Bullying Concerns Grow Nation-Wide: Young Children Need New Ways to Respond

Children's book author believes that imagination and positive energy are the answers.

Bullying is a growing problem that is increasingly affecting Americans of all ages. With the recent scandal surrounding Miami Dolphins players Richie Incognito and Jonathan Martin, the issue has once again been thrust into the national spotlight, and it is growing clear that people from all walks of life are being harmed. Still, many agree that young children are at the highest risk of suffering the negative effects of bullying.

Children's book author Joe Scott has just published the first book in a new series for kids ages 3-8, The Friend Ship Friendesha. In it, he presents the tools needed for young children to resist and combat bullying in healthy, productive ways. His philosophy revolves around the balance between positive and negative energy, and he sees imagination as the ultimate way for young children to respond to the world around them. For that reason, he decided to create a group of positive-energy-producing protagonists from outer space.

Joe Scott, who splits his time between the Merrimack River Valley and Florida, believes that the starring characters in his new story, the lovable "Friendeshans," can serve as perfect imaginary friends for children in bullying situations. At the same time, he wants kids to be able to use the villainous "Oily Spoilies" as a way to understand why kids are bullying them at school.

"They can't eat, they can't sleep, and they can't concentrate in class. Today,it's changed, with computers and Facebook and so on. The emotional damage there, and the way it come's home with kids… that's what this book is about. It's about defending these kids from being in an environment where they are really afraid of somebody."

Bullying can affect all age groups, but experts believe that the most effective way to combat it may be to teach preventative measures to very young children.
