Brooklyn Artist Susan Grossman: Film Noir Exhibition At Birnam Wood Galleries
Birnam Wood Galleries is pleased to present Film Noir, an exhibition of new works by Susan Grossman which will open on January 15th and run through February 18th. The exhibition reception is on January 17th, from 6pm-8pm.
New York (I-Newswire) January 13, 2013 - This will be Ms. Grossman’s eleventh solo exhibition in New York, and her first since a well-received, one-woman show at the Butler Institute of American Art in Ohio in 2012.
Susan Grossman’s large-scale works in charcoal and pastel—mostly of her native New York City--have been described by The New York Times as “capturing the exhilarating vitality of metropolitan street life.” In fact, the fifteen new drawings showcase the artist’s remarkable range as well as the medium’s vast expressive possibilities.
Painterly, yet rendered in a distinct photo-real style, the drawings of Susan Grossman inhabit a timeless space. Her figures are infused with promise and an unfolding story that invites us to imagine not just what we see, but what might be. An inheritor of the 20th Century tradition of naturalistic style, Susan Grossman is a student of the camera view. She sees—and draws--in focus, with a sensibility that tempers realism with a soft touch. Her people are intent, purposeful; yet somehow they linger in the moment like the subjects of a film’s slow tracking shot. Their narrative, though often artfully simple, intrigues us with its potential. We want to know where they are going, and where they have been.
It is a gift as old as human language: Ms. Grossman is a storyteller. Film Noir is an exhibition of graceful pictures that mine the rich and varied hues of black and white.
