Health professionals agree that human milk provides the most complete form of nutrition for infants, including premature and ill newborns. The numerous benefits of breastfeeding include the joyful bonding experience, the cost savings, and the health benefits for both mother and baby. Breast milk is very rich in nutrients and contains antibodies to protect your baby, say Redlands Community Hospital experts.

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office on Women’s Health, breastfeeding mothers have a lower risk of developing certain health problems in women including breast cancer, type 2 diabetes, ovarian cancer, and postpartum depression.
Research also shows that breastfeeding can also be beneficial for babies by reducing the risk of a number of diseases including Type 1 diabetes, childhood leukemia, atopic dermatitis (a type of skin rash) in babies, and SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome).

However, there are also rare exceptions when breast milk is not recommended. Under certain circumstances, a physician will need to make a case-by-case assessment to determine whether a woman's environmental exposure or her own medical condition warrants her to interrupt or stop breastfeeding.
