Black Running Club Host Virtual Run to Raise Awareness About Diabetes

Run2LIVE is hosting the "I'm Out Running/Out Walking Against Diabetes Virtual 5K" to Heighten Awareness about the Disease in Black Communities

African-American running club Run2LIVE, Inc. is hosting a virtual run--the "I'm Out Running/Out Walking Against Diabetes 5K"--to start the new year right and get people up and running to fight preventable diseases like diabetes. The virtual run will take place all around the country, and participants can run the 3.1 mile distance anytime between January 12th and January 31st, anywhere in the country. Participants can run the 3.1 miles in one day or over several days. They can even run it in conjunction with another race and the miles still count. Participants can register for the Virtual Run at http://runtwolive.org/virtual-run/

Proceeds from the Virtual Run will be given to the American Diabetes Association to help with diabetes research and education. Participants will be given a 3" medal and a wrist band for their achievement and assistance in supporting this cause.

Diabetes is particularly close to the hearts of the Run2LIVE team. The disease is reaching the crisis stage in African-American communities, where nearly 19 percent of all black Americans age 20 or older have been diagnosed with diabetes.

Run2LIVE's goal is to get more African Americans to set healthy New Year's resolutions and to use distance running as a way to gain and maintain a healthy lifestyle, which is a great way to prevent diabetes or help reverse the effects of the disease. "Regular running was the catalyst that I used to control my diabetes, and training to run races encouraged me to exercise more and eat better," remarked Stephen Jackson, Executive Director of Run2LIVE, Inc.

What is a virtual run?
A virtual run is a running/walking event where everyone sets their own course to run. Participants sign up online and complete the event anytime within the specified two-week race period. Runners can split it up or do it all at once. The advantage of a virtual run is that everyone can set his or her own route and pace.
