oujda (I-Newswire) December 21, 2013 - The L-Arginine is one of the 20 most common natural amino acids. L-Arginine is a conditionally nonessential amino acid, meaning most of the time it can be manufactured by the human body, and does not need to be obtained directly through the diet. The biosynthetic pathway however does not produce sufficient L-Arginine, and some must still be consumed through diet. Individuals who have poor nutrition or certain physical conditions may be advised to increase their intake of foods containing L-Arginine. L-Arginine is found in a wide variety of foods.Eggs, meats, milk, soy proteins, peanuts, and walnuts are all sources of L-Arginine.
The physiologically active form, L-Arginine, is obtained by breaking down proteins. L-Arginine also may be synthesized in the laboratory. Because L-Arginine may be synthesized in the body, it is cla-ssified as a nonessential amino acid in adults. However, in children and in people with certain conditions (eg, infection, trauma), L-Arginine synthesis may become compromised and then may be considered semi-essential.
L-Arginine was first isolated in 1886, reportedly from the extract of a lupine ( Lupinus spp.) seedling. Lupinus is a genus in the legume (Fabaceae) plant family.
L-Arginine is a chemical precursor to nitric oxide (a blood vessel-widening agent called a vasodilator). Early evidence suggests that L-Arginine may help treat medical conditions that improve with increased vasodilation. These conditions include chest pain, atherosclerosis (clogged arteries), heart disease or failure, erectile dysfunction, intermittent claudication/peripheral vascular disease, and vascular headaches (headache-inducing blood vessel swelling).
L-Arginine also triggers the body to make protein and has been studied for healing wounds, bodybuilding, enhancing sperm production, and preventing tissue wasting in people with critical illnesses. However, caution is warranted. L-Arginine use was a-ssociated with death in certain groups of heart patients. Caution is also needed when using L-Arginine to treat pre-eclampsia (high blood pressure in pregnancy).
L-Arginine(CAS NO.74-79-3) has few reported adverse reactions. Nausea and diarrhea have been reported infrequently. Bitter taste may occur with higher doses. Due to its ability to dilate blood vessels, low blood pressure may occur. Intravenous preparations containing L-Arginine hydrochloride have a high chloride content that may increase the risk for metabolic acidosis in patients with electrolyte imbalances. Low pota-ssium and high serum urea nitrogen levels may occur in patients with kidney and/or liver impairment.
