World War II Sketches to Exhibit at Total Relief Footwear

(I-Newswire) March 24, 2005 - (Austin, TX) - In commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II, a collection of nearly 30 wartime paintings and sketches by artist David Winfield Scott will be on display at Total Relief Footwear. The exhibit will open on Friday, May 20 and will close on Sunday, November 13, 2005. The paintings depict everyday life from induction and boot camp through his service in an aerial reconnaissance and photo intelligence unit in the European theatre of the war.

"Upon being drafted into the service, daily life was demanding, challenging and dehumanizing at times," said David Scott. "Sketching the events of the day was excellent therapy from the stress and rigors that we endured throughout the war".

David served in a squadron specializing in aerial photo reconnaissance in North Africa, Italy and France. Aerial reconnaissance technology was in its infancy at the beginning of his service, and many of the procedures for taking pictures and communicating enemy positions were refined at this time. Sketches depict the evolution of aerial photo reconnaissance, the operations on foreign airfields, and daily life on troop ships, going to and returning from the war.

David Scott, now 88 years old, lives in Northwest Austin with his wife Doris. He has had an impressive career in the art world, serving as director for the Smithsonian's Museum of American Art, as Planning Officer for the National Gallery of Art and as Acting Director of the Corcoran Gallery. He has been called upon for consultation on planning projects by more than twenty museums in the United States and Canada, as well as the Louvre in Paris and national museums in Cairo and Riyadh. He is also a past president of the California Watercolor Society. His artwork spans a 70-year period, ranging from representational watercolor landscapes to brilliant abstract paintings.

An artist's reception will be held on Friday, May 20 at Total Relief Footwear from 7 to 10 p.m.
