Ozark Dermatology Clinic (ODC), with locations throughout Northwest Arkansas, is offering patients an easier way to consult with their physicians. A mobile application is now available that will allow users to consult with an ODC physician without having to make an office visit.

After downloading the app, users select their dermatologist and are then prompted to take pictures of the problem area, answer questions about their problem and then complete the appointment through a secure checkout, according to the ODC's website. Within 48 hours, their dermatologist will review the photos and information provided to make a diagnosis and treatment plan.

Users can log-in to see their diagnosis and recommended treatment plan. If a prescription is necessary, the staff at ODC can call it in to the patient's pharmacy of choice. All residents of Arkansas and Texas are welcome to use to use this convenient service.

The mobile app was created and developed by innovative dermatologists Chris Schach, M.D., Kevin St. Clair, M.D. and Eric Stewart, M.D. The project was in research and development for more than 3 years and was released in 2012.

The app is not intended to replace in office visits, but to be beneficial to patients in the following ways: saving time and money, not having to wait weeks for an appointment and the ability to monitor conditions without repetitive visits. The app is also ideal for those living in remote areas.

"Most doctors charge their patients about $50-60 per virtual visit, which is often
less than the co-pay to see a dermatologist in-person," Chris Schach, ODC dermatologist and co-creator of the app, said. "We believe that this technology may lead to earlier diagnosis of skin cancer and other skin diseases."

The mobile app also makes it possible for physicians to make more diagnoses and to treat more patients.

"For patients, a virtual visit is 3-5 times more efficient than an in-clinic appointment and studies show dermatologists can diagnose most skin conditions with just a few good photos. The Ozark Dermatology app is an exciting high tech solution for the growing number of patients in need of dermatologic expertise. This is a health care slam dunk. The smartphone will continue to bridge the gap between doctor and patient throughout our state and worldwide."

"The annual American Academy of Dermatology free skin cancer screening reported 93,000 people examined in-person by dermatologists in 2010," Schach said. "By using our teledermatology system, these same dermatologists could screen 270,000 or more, and offer their services to the entire state where they are licensed. More people screened results in more lives saved."
