(I-Newswire) May 18, 2010 - Women’s eNews, a daily Internet-based news service, has been awarded a $200,000 grant to continue investigative journalism to increase the understanding of issues related to healthy birth outcomes and infant mortality disparities in African American communities.

The W.K. Kellogg Foundation grant for Women’s eNews’ Black Maternal Health Project is effective on April 01, and marks the third year of funding received by Women’s eNews to analyze and present information through its Web site, e-mails, videos, Podcasts and events.

The Black Maternal Health Project focuses on the specific needs of African American women to better prepare them for their nuanced experience of motherhood and childbirth. It provides the latest, most reliable information, both online and in print for African American prospective parents and others concerned about African American maternal health.

Women’s eNews has over 54,000 subscribers and receives 150,000 visits a month from a readership that includes health professionals, leaders of nonprofit organizations, academics and activists who extend the reach of the Women’s eNews investigative reporting by sharing through their on professional and personal networks.

Beginning in the autumn of 2007, Women’s eNews published stories and videos reporting on the health benefits for mother and child from breast feeding; the dramatically higher risks of maternal mortality among African American women, making them three to six times more likely to die during pregnancy and childbirth, and successful strategies that enhance the health of African American women and infants.

A video in the series featuring an African-American grandmother, a mother and infant has gone viral on YouTube.

Women’s eNews also launched SisterSpace, a blog written by editorial director of the series Kimberly Seals Allers on her experiences as a black mother and her knowledge of black maternal and infant mortality.
