During June, the total UK rainfall was 145.3mm – exactly twice as much as you would normally expect compared to the 1971-2000 average of 72.6mm. However, gardening experts at Turf Supplies Direct are urging people to take advantage of the weather and lay their new turf anyway.

During the last few months, the bad weather has smashed a number of records. Figures from the Met Office had previously shown that it has also been the wettest April in the UK for over 100 years.

There is no need to use pre-turfing fertilisers as the lawn is already fed and once down it doesn’t require anything apart from watering and mowing for 8 weeks.

Gardeners should also maximise any rainfall by collecting it in a water butt. During long periods of dry weather a garden can be kept well moisturised by filling a watering can with water from the butt. It is also important to mow regularly and keep weeds at bay during the month of July.
