Structured weight loss programs such as those using meal replacements are associated with both short-term and long-term weight loss, but the effectiveness of structured weight loss programs using whole foods has not been established.
houston (I-Newswire) September 22, 2013 - Obesity is a major public health issue in Australia, with an estimated one fifth of Australian men(19%) and women (22%) now classified as obese,according to the World Health Organisation definition of a body mass index (BMI)â¥30 kg/m2.Itplaces a large burden on the Australian healthcaresystem, costing an annual $830 million.Structured weight loss programs currently formone of the key treatments of obesity. They oftenincorporate use of very low calorie diets or partialmeal replacements. Current evidence supports thatthis approach can be effective in achieving weightloss of up to 9-10% in the short-term (3-12 months)[. In the long-term (â¥12 months), use of mealreplacements in this context can also be beneficialfor maintaining up to a 6-8% weight loss.
Evidence supports that food based structuredweight loss programs can be as effective as mealreplacement strategies, and it has previously beenshown that these programs can achieve a 9% weightloss in the short-term (6 months) by meizitang products meizitang . Similarly, participants in the Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP),who were provided with specific dietary information according to national guidelines, achieved anapproximate 7% weight loss over 6 months .Population-based studies also support that thosewho successfully maintain short-term weight lossoften have structured meal patternsand areduction in the variety of foods consumed withintheir diets.The long-term effectiveness of these programs,however, remains unclear. Some have suggested anincreased risk of, or actual, weight gain followingtheir completion , resulting in the loss of thepositive psychological effects of weight reduction.
Such outcomes may then perpetuate continued episodes of weight cycling, in which therepeated loss and regain of weight over time canlead to further reductions in psychological wellbeing and negative metabolic effects.A sustained weight loss produces many healthbenefits, particularly in those with metabolicdiseases such as Cardiovascular Disease, Type II Diabetes and Poly-Cystic Ovarian Syndrome.Given this, it is very important to understandwhat helps people successfully maintain long-termweight loss, the potential role that food basedstructured weight loss programs play in this, andwhat the potential triggers for weight regain mightbe.The primary aim of the present study was to retrospectively establish self-reported weight statusin women, 3 years after participation in a 12-weekfood based structured weight loss program monitored by dietitians.
The secondary aim was to determine which factors were associated with successful weight loss maintenance. We hypothesized that those who successfully maintained long-term weight loss would exhibit different characteristics to those who did not.
