Study found giving mice watermelon juice seemed to improve cardiovascular health.
A recent study from Purdue University and the University of Kentucky that looked at the effect of giving mice watermelon juice found it resulted in lower weight, cholesterol and arterial plaque. The researchers said that citrulline is one of several compounds that seem to improve cardiovascular health.
Two groups of mice were fed diets high in saturated fat and cholesterol. One group received water containing just two percent watermelon juice. The control group was given the same amount of water with a matched carbohydrate content of the watermelon juice. The mice drinking the watermelon juice gained 30 percent less weight than the control group and their LDL cholesterol was 50 percent less. In addition, the watermelon group had close to a 50 percent reduction in arterial plaque. The researchers also noted elevated levels of citrulline.
