Mermaid Ice Sculpture Twists Plot in Mortdecai

LA Ice Art creates and features an enormous mermaid ice sculpture for Hollywood's newest film release "Mortdecai" directed by David Koepp. Ice artist Rex Covington reveals on set details around A-list actors Johnny Depp, Gwyneth Paltrow and Olivia Munn.

An enormous mermaid ice sculpture, surrounded by lobster and caviar, becomes the focal point of intrigue when it is sprayed with poison in this pivotal scene from the new film release, “Mortdecai”, by Lionsgate Entertainment. The over the top decor served well for this opulent frolicking party scene, and the principle characters, played by Johnny Depp, Gwyneth Paltro, Ewan McGregor and Olivia Munn, are none the wiser as the villain lurks in their midst.

Rising up with a giant ice pearl in hand, the sculpture is the centerpiece of this extravagant buffet spread that topped all others. The 1200 lbs. ice sculpture, created by ice artist Rex Covington of LA Ice Art, measured 7’ long and 5’ tall.  Three sculptures were made for this shoot, which is customary on industry sets in case any are broken, and as it turned out, one was. The massive fragile mermaids were transported as fully completed, 1 piece statues, and 6 men with lifting equipment placed them on set in the backyard of an exquisite mansion in a secluded area of Beverly Hills, California, where the filming took place.

"These industry jobs are the coolest part of what I do, but spending 2 days on set with all these talented A-list actors can kind of blow your mind if you don't stay focused."
