Unisys Customer Recognized for Industry Best Practices in Airport Operations

(I-Newswire) April 6, 2005 - Unisys today announced that its client, China's Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport, has been named a Laureate for the 21st Century Achievement Award as part of IDG's Computerworld Honors program. Computerworld honored the airport for its successful implementation of operation and management systems, which are supported by Unisys and designed to manage a yearly passenger-handling capacity of 25 million people.

Each year, the Computerworld Honors committee nominates organizations in 10 fields whose use of information technology is noteworthy for the originality of its conception, the breadth of its vision and its overall benefit to society. Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport will be recognized on April 3rd at a formal ceremony along with the other nominated companies. On June 6, 2005, five companies from the 10 fields deemed most outstanding by a panel of judges will be given special recognition as worldwide finalists in a ceremony in Washington, D.C. At this time, the Chairmen's Committee presents 10 21st Century Achievement Awards to the organizations selected by the judges as first among their peers.



Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport opened for business on August 5, 2004. The new airport is designed for a yearly passenger-handling capacity of 25 million people, has apron space for 66 aircraft and freight-handling capacity of 1.1 million tons. To meet these demands, the airport deployed Unisys Central Integrated Information Management System (CIIMS), enabling it to operate at the same high level as the new Hong Kong, Shanghai and Beijing Airports.



The Unisys CIMMS environment is integrating the airport's information flow from systems around the airport, collating and storing data in a secure central airport database, and supplying information to the airport community. The system also facilitates coordinated future planning, control of daily operations, and centralized accounting and reporting functions. As a result, Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport has become a model for real-time, integrated operations and has been touted as one of the best operation and management systems ever built.
