Try The World's Hottest Chocolate!

A new visitor attraction in York has created a chocolate that is so hot it is expected to burn its way in to the record books.

York's Chocolate Story has produced the aptly named Hot, Hot Chocolate, infused with Naga 12 Pod oil which contains one of the hottest chillis in the world, Naga BihJolokia. Registering at a not-so-cool five million on the Scoville scale, this chocolate is so spicy that challengers are asked to sign a disclaimer confirming that they are aware of the risks involved before battling the inferno.

Andrew Thwaite, head chocolatier at York's Chocolate Story, said: "We love to experiment and push the boundaries when it comes to our creations and this one certainly does that! We've taken chocolate on a full circle from its Mayan equatorial origins, when it's believed chilli was a common additive, right up to the present. It's 100 times hotter than a vindaloo, and definitely not for the faint hearted."

Brave contenders who manage to eat the Hot, Hot Chocolate will have their name immortalised on the chocolate wall of fame, receive a scorching certificate of achievement and some (milder) chilli chocolate to celebrate their resilience.

York's Chocolate Story opened in March this year, and tells the story of the city's rich chocolate history which spans over 300 years. Sweet-toothed visitors can hear about York's heritage, taste some of the nation's favourite sweets, design your own chocolate bar wrapper, learn the fine art of chocolate tasting and see captivating chocolate-making demonstrations, all in the UK's home of chocolate.

CHILLI AND SCOVILLE FACTS AND FIGURES

• The chemical in chilli that causes the burning sensation is called capsaicin

• The scoville scale measures how much capsaicin is in a chilli

• The scoville unit of measurement is the number of times it would need to be diluted with water for the heat to become almost undetectable

• A measurement of one part capsaicin per million corresponds to about 15 Scoville units

• The bhut jolokia chilli carries a Scoville rating of 1 million

• The concentrated oil in this chocolate bar carries a rating of 5 million Scovilles

• The chilli oil used is over 2,200 times hotter than Tabasco sauce according to the manufacturers

• A Jalepeno pepper measures a lowly 2,500-8,000 Scovilles

• The hottest Vindaloos can be up to 50,000 scovilles - this is 100 times hotter

• We don't have a direct comparison because each chocolate bar is different but we think the previous hottest chilli chocolate was about 1,000,000 Scovilles - the mean average rating of the Bhut Jolokia chilli

• People from the UK are eating food more than 400 times hotter than in the 1960s, and consume more ultra-hot dishes than any other country in Europe
