Top industry associations to support OLED Lighting Design Summit

The world's first and only OLED lighting design conference is scheduled to take place in Boston in December this year.

Three lighting industry associations have decided to support the world's first and only organic light emitting diode (OLED) lighting design conference, to be held in Boston (December 2-3) this year.

OLED Insider, which is gearing up to conduct the OLED Lighting Design Summit, has gained backing from Chicago, Illinois-based International Association of Lighting Designers (IALD), The Professional Lighting Designers' Association and The Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IES) for the two-day conference.

Over 100 lighting design professionals are expected to attend this conference.

After many years of development, OLED lighting has now started commercial production. According to Display Search, the market is expected to be worth over $6 billion by 2018.

"This breakthrough is going to change the day-to-day business of every single lighting designer in the world. Lighting designers who get their business ready now will be the ones who see the lion's share of the profits," said OLED Insider's spokesperson Joshua Bull.

This technology has several advantages over that of conventional lighting. Such systems can be used in television screens, computer monitors, small, portable system screens such as cell phones and PDAs, advertising, information and indication. OLEDs can also be used in light sources for general space illumination, and large-area light-emitting elements.

Bull underlined that once users see OLED lighting in action at a price they can afford "it will be game over for other lighting technologies".

Agenda

The event, for which 16 OLED industry experts have been confirmed so far, will see discussion over some of the pertinent issues.

Highlights of the event include discussion about design capabilities and new challenges that OLED lighting presents, how can one use OLEDs capabilities and attractive price point to win over new customers and tap into new markets for lighting design, and the efficacy of OLEDs. The Summit will also provide an exclusive insight into how OLED technology will add value to many types of light installations and broaden design capabilities through improved colour range, viewing angles etc.

The speaker line-up includes:

- Bernhard Dessecker, Lighting Designer, Ingo Maurer
- Sheila Kennedy, AIA, Director of Design & Applied Research, Kennedy & Violich Architecture, Ltd.
- Avraham Mendall Mor, Partner, Lightswitch Architectural
- Brian Terao, Director of Solid state lighting, Osram Opto Semiconductors GmbH
- James R Benya, Principal, Benya Lighting Design
