According to renowned softball peak performance coach Marc Dagenais, softball players miss out on developing their entire game by merely focusing on building their endurance instead of their speed.

(I-Newswire) November 23, 2009 - “Stop running around and start sprinting.”

This is what a top softball coach is saying about softball players and coaches who continue to emphasize building endurance over speed power and strength.

According to renowned softball peak performance coach Marc Dagenais, softball players miss out on developing their entire game by merely focusing on building their endurance instead of their speed.

Dagenais says that softball is a game that requires a sudden burst of speed over endurance because, “most of the plays last five seconds or less.” Because of this, he recommends players and coaches take up the speed system, otherwise known anaerobic alatic system or ATP-PC system.

The speed system provides players with energy for any effort that lasts for less than 10 seconds. “This is the first energy system to kick in when we start moving,” says Dagenais.

However, Dagenais says that he does not discount the importance of building a player’s endurance as well. He says that cardiovascular training that builds players’ endurance is important to control their body fat, recover quickly after an intense effort, increase stamina and resistance to fatigue, decrease tension, aid sleep, and improves players’ mood while reducing depression and anxiety.

He warns, however, that, “doing too much [endurance training] will be detrimental [to a softball player’s performance]. Once [they] have reached a certain level of endurance, [they] need to focus on building speed, power, and strength. This is what [players] truly need on the field.”

Dagenais is a softball coach with more than 20 years of coaching teams that include the Canadian Women’s Softball National Team.
