Todd Named Head Of Anesthesia

Michael M. Todd, M.D., has been named head of the Department of Anesthesia in the University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine and UI Hospitals and Clinics. The appointment is effective immediately.

(I-Newswire) September 10, 2005 - Todd, a professor in anesthesia, joined the UI in 1986 and has served as interim head of the department since July 2004. His clinical research interests include anesthesia for neurosurgical patients and the effects of anesthetics on normal and injured brains.

In addition to his clinical research, Todd also has a longstanding involvement in education and training of UI medical students and early-career physicians.

"Dr. Todd is an outstanding physician-scientist and educator with proven leadership abilities that make him the ideal choice to head the department," said Jean Robillard, M.D., dean of the UI Carver College of Medicine. "During his many years of service at the UI, Dr. Todd has always led by example, and his activities have played a significant role in the department's national reputation for excellence in clinical care and research."

Donna Katen-Bahensky, director and CEO of UI Hospitals and Clinics, also endorsed Todd's appointment.

"Dr. Todd is an acknowledged leader in the field of anesthesia," Katen-Bahensky said. "Under his leadership, the department already has made great strides in advancing efficient delivery of clinical anesthesia care. In addition, his expertise in leading large clinical trials helps anesthesiologists here and around the country learn the best ways to care for patients."

Todd has served as principal and co-investigator of numerous National Institutes of Health-funded laboratory and clinical studies since receiving his first grant in 1985. These include a long series of studies concerning brain swelling, brain blood flow, hypoxia and hemodilution, as well as a very large clinical trial examining the effects of cooling on neurologic outcome during aneurysm surgery. He has also worked with colleagues in anesthesia, neurosurgery and radiology on several projects evaluating the movement of the cervical spine during endotracheal intubation.

Todd earned a medical degree from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine in 1975 and completed his internship there. He completed his residency in anesthesia at Massachusetts General Hospital in 1978 and served as resident in anesthesia from 1978 to 1979. Prior to his appointment to the UI faculty, Todd was on the faculty of the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine. In addition to authoring over 130 scientific articles, Todd also is editor-in-chief of the journal Anesthesiology. This is the official journal of the American Society of Anesthesiologists and the largest and most prestigious publication in the field (circulation 40,000).

Todd's salary will be $405,000.
