The Worst Holiday Card Ideas
Some of the worst holiday card ideas and how to avoid taking one this year.
Mount Laurel (I-Newswire) October 24, 2012 - As the holiday season gets closer, many families are starting to look into creating an annual holiday card. To help plan ahead, look at attributes that make for a horrible holiday card, and then follow that up with a little discussion on what makes a great one, and how to end up with the best possible card. It comes down to doing your research and reading those glamour shots ratings ahead of time!
So, first-off, what makes the worst? There are a ton of “Worst Holiday Cards” lists online. They are great for a laugh, and if a closer look is taken, there are several common elements. One characteristic is simply looking cheap and unappealing. If that's the case, unflattering flashes, washed out faces, and blurry or grainy images may be seen.
Another common characteristic of the worst of the worst is simply bad overall style, resulting in a cheesy or awkward final product. The worst offenders utilize goofy photo-manipulations (Word of advice, don't become a bobble head!), shoddy fonts, over-the-top costumes, and even attempts at artistic nudity. Remember, any card can get into the wrong hands and can wind up going viral online- so keep it clean.
The last common aspect of the worst holiday photo cards: bad composition. Sometimes this can happen because the photographer isn't very talented at composing a shot. In other cases, it can result from a rushed photo session. Either way, there will be uncomfortable-looking poses, spooky faces, and upset children, none of which help to create a happy holiday card.
But enough about the worst, what makes the best? That's a little harder to come by. The best holiday cards capture something about the spirit of the season, something joyful, simple, and beautiful. Aesthetically, there will be clean lines, elegant fonts and wording, even lighting, and the unobtrusive use of quality equipment. Faces will have natural expressions with easy sense of cheer. In general, the current trend lends itself to a cool journalistic style (like you might see in a magazine). A great holiday card will tell a story, and a good photographer will be able to tell it well. Freelancers may be cheaper, but remember, a big camera doesn't equal big talent. And while more reliable, not all professional glamour shots studios are created equal. Be sure to check into the glamour shots ratings before booking an appointment. Spend money wisely and enjoy the beautiful card that will come out of it.
