Atlanta founded breast cancer nonprofit organization, The Sport of Giving, (www.thesportofgiving.org) provides a template for women’s cancer fundraising in any community in the United States.

(I-Newswire) February 24, 2010 - ATLANTA, Feb 24, 2010 – The Sport of Giving, an Atlanta, Georgia founded nonprofit organization, announced today a switch to take their organization nationwide. Originally founded to support local breast cancer initiatives in the community, The Sport of Giving is broadening its scope in support of all women’s cancers in every community throughout the United States.

“The vision for the future involves encouraging other clubs and neighborhoods throughout the U.S. to rally with The Sport of Giving and support the effort in the battle against women’s cancer,” said Sheila Stevens, who founded The Sport of Giving in 2001 to honor the spirit of her mother who had succumbed to cancer. “With The Sport of Giving’s Atlanta efforts as a model, the hope is that hundreds of women, men and children will come together to benefit cancer patients in their local communities.”

The Sport of Giving is designed to be an energized grassroots effort with a mission to ensure the very best medical care, support, education and cancer prevention for every woman in every community. Events are totally staffed by volunteer efforts and all profits go towards supporting the community in which the money was raised.

After the huge success The Sport of Giving has seen in Atlanta, including raising over $1.2 million to date, the organization has created an event kit to provide other people in communities around the country with a guide to hosting their own Sport of Giving event.

The event kit is a guide containing proven processes and procedures to insure a successful, fun event and should be used as a toolbox to recruit volunteers, assemble committees and run sponsorship efforts effectively. (Visit www.thesportofgiving.org and go to the “Host an Event Tab” to request an official copy of the event kit.)

Possible Sport of Giving events include, but are not limited to SwingFest (Golf Tournament), VolleyFest (Tennis Tournament), RunFest (Run/Walk event), Fashion shows, Pink Party Social and other creative fundraising opportunities.

“Even though we are expanding our scope, our mission at The Sport of Giving remains the same: to allow women of our communities access to the very best medical care with the highest level of support for those diagnosed with cancer,” said Stevens. “Through education, awareness and improved medical facilities we are making our communities a better place to live.”

About The Sport of Giving

The Sport of Giving is a 501(C)(3), non-profit foundation that helps support Women’s Cancer Care and Prevention on the community level through a multitude of special fundraising avenues (sporting and non-sporting events) for men and women. The Sport of Giving originated in North Metro Atlanta as “Volley For a Cure” in 2001 by founder Sheila Stevens, who wanted to make a difference in people’s lives while honoring the spirit of her mother who had succumbed to cancer. The organization has since raised more than $1.2 million through annual tennis and golf tournaments, running events and creative fundraising for the local community. In 2009 The Sport of Giving made the step to bring the organization to a national level – helping communities around the country hold similar fundraising events to raise money to fund local women’s cancer care and prevention initiatives.
