The Screen Explodes in December at The Hollywood Theatre

Holiday favorites, film lecture series, New Year’s Eve toga party on tap this month





















(I-Newswire) November 28, 2009 - The Hollywood Theatre, an independent repertory cinema located in Dormont, kicks off its film education series with The Art of the Spaghetti Western in December. The program will be led by John Bender, film critic and film soundtrack expert, and debuts on December 15 with a discussion and screening of the film Django (1966), which was directed by Sergio Corbucci and spawned more than 30 sequels. The second installment features Sergio Leone’s iconic The Good, The Bad and The Ugly (1966) on December 27.

The rest of the Hollywood’s December schedule features classic holiday fare as well as new holiday classics, midnight showings of cult favorites, a wine tasting and the popular Dinner & A Movie.

•Christmas comes to the Hollywood starting with Breakfast with Santa on December 12 beginning at 11 AM. Cost is $10 per person which includes breakfast, Cartoon Capers and a chance to confab with the big man himself! Other holiday offerings for kids of all ages include The Polar Express, Scrooged, It’s A Wonderful Life, White Christmas and National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.

•This month’s Dinner & A Movie offering is A Christmas Story, Jean Shepherd’s charming tale of young Ralphie and his quest to get a Red Ryder BB gun for Christmas. The event takes place on Sunday, December 20 at 6 PM. Dinner will be catered once again by Enrico’s Biscotti bakery and café. Tickets are $30 per person which covers dinner, dessert and the movie admission. A children’s menu will be available; price TBA. Reservations may be made by calling the theater at 412-344-1245 by December 18.

•Ring in 2010 with a raucous New Year’s Eve toga party! The party starts at 9:30 PM followed by a midnight screening of Animal House. Admission is $20 per person and includes live music and a midnight buffet catered by the theater’s own Hollywood Deli.

•The monthly wine tasting event will take place on December 11 at 7 PM, followed by the Woody Allen masterpiece, Annie Hall.

•Family friendly films scheduled in December include Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory, The Wizard of Oz and The Sound of Music.

•The Hollywood is Pittsburgh’s home for midnight screenings of The Rocky Horror Picture Show and The Big Lebowski. Other cult offerings this month include Pink Flamingoes and Shock Treatment, a “sequel” to Rocky Horror.

Ticket prices for all shows (excluding special events) are $6 for adults and $4 for children and seniors.

The Hollywood Theatre is located at 1449 Potomac Avenue in Dormont (15216). The theater reopened in August 2009 and is under new management by Motion Picture Heritage Corp., a nonprofit company based in Franklin, Indiana, that rehabilitates and operates classic cinemas nationwide in partnership with local communities. Opened in 1924, the historic Hollywood Theatre is the last surviving single-screen theater in the South Hills of Pittsburgh. The Hollywood is also a BYOB theater (beer & wine only).
