The Reel Independent Film Extravaganza Kicks Off October 11 At West End Cinema In Washington, DC

4th annual Washington, DC-based film festival will feature filmmakers/groundbreaking films from across the globe

The Reel Independent Film Extravaganza (RIFE), a film festival for filmmakers by filmmakers, is scheduled for Friday, October 11 through Thursday, October 17 at the West End Cinema in Washington, DC, and will feature a networking event at the Moca Art Gallery on Saturday, October 12.

The 4th Annual RIFE event has attracted filmmakers from around the globe and will feature films from the U.S., Canada, Italy, the Netherlands, France, Poland, and Israel. The films cover the full scope of genres, including coming of age, human rights, neo-noir, sci-fi, and silent.

Opening the event will be a meet and greet at 5:00 pm on Friday, October 11, which will be followed by the screening of two films that are receiving great attention throughout the film festival circuit. "The New Public" is a film chronicling the challenging and emotional four-year journey of the first students, parents, and teachers involved with a newly formed, arts-focused public high school in Brooklyn, NY that was founded by a former basketball player/DJ. The film made its television broadcast debut on the PBS/World Channel series, "America Reframed" on October 1st. "Vital Voices: Hawa Abdi", is a moving animated film about Somalia's first female gynecologist who, following the collapse of the government, treated upwards of 90,000 individuals who made their way to her one room clinic during a two decade span.

Many of last year's winning films at the festival went on to experience worldwide success on the indie film festival circuit, including "Theresa is a Mother", "Invisible Men", and "The Three Way", all of which captured multiple awards and continue to garner attention. (More information about the filmmakers can be found in RIFE's blog.) This year's event will also feature films that have already begun to achieve success, including "Not Anymore," which has racked up awards from such festivals as Long Beach International Film Festival, the Isle of Wight Film Festival, the Lens Film Festival in LA, and the Evolution International Film Festival in Hollywood, to name a few.
