Online, September 23, 2013 (Newswire.com) - The Mission in Citrus Homeless Shelters proudly presented Walmart, and Inverness Florida Manager Larry Gamble and his family, the new Commitment to the Homeless Award.for 2013.The Award was bought and paid for by the homeless working in the community. Donated funds were not used in any way. Larry has always been there for those in need, From diapers for newborn homeless babies, cleaning supplies, grants and much more, he has went far beyond his call of duty. Larry is truly an asset to Walmart and our community. His family has taken an active interest in his involvement , and are very supportive in his efforts to help others. The homeless can never thank them enough.
We would also like to take the time to thank the Walmarts in Lecanto and Homosassa Florida. They have seen the need in the community and have stepped up to help as well. Without Walmart in this present economy , many agencies helping those in need would have never survived.
The Mission's helps all in need to the best of their ability. They follow the parable of the Good Samaritan, as there are no requirements for their services. They constantly reinvent the wheel to make it all work. The faces of homelessness can change as well as each individual's circumstances. Their program has no paid staff. It is the homeless helping the homeless. They offer each other a hand up, not a hand out. They went from 60 tents to five shelters in less than three years. One Veteran's shelter had to close due to lack of funds. Their largest Veteran's shelter opened on less than $ 5000,and is currently raising funds for a sprinkler system. The Mission in Citrus Inc. was founded in 2008, after our founder became homeless himself, and found that traditional shelters were not working, or addressing the needs of Veterans. Veterans fought for the rights of all, including themselves. The Founder felt that no one should lose those rights by becoming homeless. The shelters he stayed in, and visited, force the residents to church, hard labor, and many other things that do not make them productive or a part of society when they leave. That is why our Veterans Shelter is helping Veterans, and our other three shelters for the homeless are all working.
In 2012, Walmart and the Walmart Foundation gave more than $1 billion in cash and in-kind contributions around the world. This includes $1 billion in cash and in-kind gifts in the United States and $82.2 million in cash and in-kind gifts in international markets. In addition, Walmart, Sam's Club and Logistics associates volunteered more than 2.2 million hours, generating $18 million to U.S. nonprofits. .
Hopefully other corporations will follow Walmart, as no veteran, man, woman, or child should be without a home or beg for food in America.
Without Walmart Manager Larry Gamble, the Mission in Citrus Homeless Shelters would have never survived. The shelters were started on less than $ 300 and are comparable in size to $ 3.7 million dollar shelter systems. The shelters are now in their fifth year. They are a miracle in itself.
