The piece was published the week of Valentine’s Day 2013, based on the results of a recent survey conducted by online reservation technology provider OpenTable. OpenTable compiles data from user’s feedback to create “Diners’ Choice” lists. The feedback is provided by diners who have used the OpenTable reservation system, after dining at a particular location, and OpenTable claims the lists are unique because the data is qualified, unbiased and fresh. The Top of the Rock restaurant was built in 1986 on the property now owned by the Phoenix Marriott Tempe at The Buttes resort complex. Uniquely perched atop an indigenous Sonoran Desert butte, or rock outcropping, the buttes upon which the property is located near downtown Tempe are part of an extinct volcano chain; the remains of which punctuate the desert landscape at odd intervals.
