There are two dominant communication protocols which aids in the spread of mobile viruses. The first one being a Blue tooth virus which infects Blue tooth activated phones. The second one is an MMS virus which uses the numbers from the infected phone’s address book and copies itself to all mobile phones.

The virus displays the word “Cabir” once the file is installed and each time the phone is turned on, the virus scans the area for other devices where it can launch itself. This scanning process leads to the draining of batteries. This virus is generally thought of as a hybrid virus or worm, but due to its mode of distribution it is called as a network worm.

Cabir does not cause actual damage and the users can prevent the virus from spreading by simply refusing to accept suspicious files. However, the virus can be made dangerous by altering its code.

In 2005, another worm called the Comm-warrior made its appearance. Similar to Cabir, the Comm-Warrior also launches itself via Blue tooth capable devices and infects other mobile phones too by making automatic replies to text. In 2006, a virus called Trojan horse appeared which is a copy of the cell phone game Doom2 and is downloadable. The Cabir and Comm-Warrior are installed when the game is downloaded and hinders the phone from operating properly.

Another example of the Trojan horse virus is the Red-Browser which proved to be the most expensive for people. The users are charged when the virus makes text calls to a phone number.

The people who do research and study about the mobile phones viruses find that most of the people fail to take the basic precautionary measures. People do not take the time to install the various ant viruses that are available. If your phone has the Bluetooth feature you can set it to “hidden” when the feature is not being used.

The advent of internet saw the competition between computer virus and computer virus hoaxes. This holds true for the mobile phones virus too. These hoaxes are real just as the real viruses. Mobile phone viruses could be riskier than their PC counterparts due to the increased dependency on wireless communication. Despite the fact that there are more than three hundred mobile viruses only little is known about their spreading patterns since there is no data available about the communication and travel patterns of mobile users.
