Swinging for a Good Cause: Pro Golfer Cristie Kerr Looks Forward to Her 'Birdies for Breast Cancer' 2012 Celebrity Golf Classic

On October 1, 2012, Cristie is hosting the 8th Annual Birdies for Breast Cancer Celebrity Golf Classic at Liberty National Golf Club in Jersey City. This event has become the premier celebrity pro-am golf event in the tri-state area.

Cristie Kerr has a good drive. After all, she is one of the world's top female professional golfers. But her drive to promote breast cancer awareness is extraordinary as well. Cristie's mother was diagnosed with this condition in 2003. Most daughters might feel helpless, but being the competitor she is, Cristie thought: How can we beat this?

In 2004, Cristie founded Birdies for Breast Cancer, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization that raises money for breast cancer research and treatment, and over the past eight years it has raised more than $1.5 million for this purpose. Her efforts further bore fruit with the June 2010 opening of The Cristie Kerr Women's Health Center at Jersey City Medical Center; to date, more than 7,000 patients have been treated there, regardless of their health insurance status.

On October 1, 2012, Cristie is hosting the 8th Annual Birdies for Breast Cancer Celebrity Golf Classic at Liberty National Golf Club in Jersey City. This event-another of Cristie's brainchildren-has become the premier celebrity pro-am golf event in the tri-state area and has attracted partnering sponsors such as BMW, Lacoste, Coca-Cola, Liberty Health, The Paul and Phyllis Fireman Foundation and Audemars Piguet. The golf tournament will enable The Cristie Kerr Women's Health Center to purchase a Stereotactic Biopsy Machine, which is integral to the Center's future development and expansion plans, by the end of 2012.

For this year's Celebrity Golf Classic, for the first time, anyone interested in supporting breast cancer research can make a pledge for his or her favorite team-either "Team Cristie Kerr" or the 15+ other teams that are participating in the event. A single pledge can be made by credit card or check, or a specific dollar amount per birdie can be designated. Historically, teams average about 10 birdies during the tournament; when the tournament concludes, those who pledged will be notified of the total amount. All pledges are tax-deductible.
