While the author of the book, Chris Webb, denies that the world will come to an end in a Mayan Apocalypse at the end of this year, he says that recent historic events such as Hurricane Sandy in New York, flooding in his home country of England and social unrest elsewhere around the world only demonstrate all to well the dangers of being unprepared.

"New York was supposed to be safe from natural disasters. Nobody ever thought they were at risk there and dozens died," says Webb. "Many lives could have been saved if people had made simple and easy preparations."
