Stunning Building Restoration At Historic Lambert House

An unusual historic Victorian building, originally owned by a local hero, is undergoing a restoration project.

Nelson (I-Newswire) January 23, 2013 - An unusual Victorian building built using stones sourced from two medieval churches is having a complete facelift.

In partnership with its current owners, British Petroleum, historic conservation company Stone Edge is restoring Lambert House in Hedon.

The East Yorkshire Victorian house, built between 1830 and 1840, was named after the original owner, Colonel Lambert White (1849-1929).

The colonel was something of local hero - a soldier in the citizen army Volunteer Force, and three times Mayor of Hedon.

While living at Lambert House, the Colonel built one part of the House almost entirely of church stone, gargoyles and all.

Originating from the 13th century, the stones came from two old broken churches, possibly St Augustine’s Church during repairs.

Stone Edge was chosen to carry out conservation because of the company’s extensive experience of, and passion for, interesting and distinctive buildings.

Richard Denneny, Managing Director of Stone Edge, said: “To say that Lambert House doesn’t quite follow the usual building rules would be an understatement. It’s crazy!

“It’s a real pleasure to work on something so totally unique and idiosyncratic.”

The work includes ground investigation and general conservation work.

Currently repairs to the existing stone floor and stained glass protection is being carried out.

BP Chemicals, who own the property share Stone Edge’s passion for building conservation and have worked hard to restore the house to its former glory.

The building is used for guests visiting BP Chemicals Saltend site.

Stone Edge is also nearing completion of another building conservation work, the full replication of historic Inglewood Manor, which was discontinued in November due to bad weather.

The firm has just completed work on the West Berkshire building’s original coat of arms, a precise replica down to the last detail.
