Study Reveals Parental Involvement Key In Diabetes Management Of Teens

As teens strive to be independent it can be challenging for parents to know how much to be involved in their lives. This is especially true when the teen has diabetes.

Leander, Tx (I-Newswire) May 16, 2011 - A recent study has shown that strong parent-child relationships actually improve a teen's diabetes management. Researchers studied 252 families every six months for a period of three years and found that the stronger the relational connection between the parent and teen the better the teen stuck to their diabetes management plan.

The researchers also found the role of the father to be especially important. When the father was regularly involved in the child's life, including participating in the diabetes care, the teens seemed to take their diabetes management more seriously.
