Students to Learn About Financial Literacy

Credit Card Education Centre brings financial literacy to students, with tools for students, parents and educators.

Vancouver (I-Newswire) November 22, 2011 - Students (and parents and educators) now have a new credit card education centre to help prepare them for their first credit card, and important component of financial literacy. The centre contains tools and tips accurate for Canadian and American students.

Credit Cards Canada set up the centre at http://www.creditcardscanada.ca/education-centre, because so many young people go into credit card debt before learning how to manage that debt.

"So many young people sign up for their first credit card and right away go into debt, often taking years to recover financially. In many cases, their parents either did not teach them basic financial literacy and sometimes parents even set a poor example to follow, and educators don't always have the resources to teach financial literacy," says Chris Keeley, President of Credit Cards Canada. "The goal of the Credit Card Education Centre is to teach basic financial skills that everybody should have before they sign up for their first credit card."

Among the tools and resources offered in the Credit Card Education Centre are:

"Are You Ready for a Credit Card?" guide
"Student Financial Responsibility Pledge" and certificate
"Teach Your Teen"
"Parent Responsibility" guide
"Is Your Teen Ready?"
"Educator's Letter to Parents"
Various credit card quizzes

The resource centre is set up to make the best uses of all three parties - parents, educators and students - to prepare the student for the real world of personal finance. The view of Credit Cards Canada is that credit cards are an incredibly useful tool when used properly and incredibly risky if not used properly.

"We make it easy for people to apply online for the credit card of their choice, so we felt it important to make sure people - especially first-time credit card holders - understand the basics as early as possible," says Keeley.

There are already plans to expand the education centre with additional resources over the next year.
