Stalker Chevrolet Gears Up For Woodward Dream Cruise and Corvette Auction

The largest one-day car event in the world is set for this Saturday, August 18.

Osceola, IA (I-Newswire) August 18, 2012 - Ever since its inception in 1995, the Woodward Dream Cruise has been the world’s largest single-day automotive celebration. It plays host to over 1.5 million car enthusiasts and features over 50,000 muscle cars on display. And it all takes place on Woodward Ave in Detroit, America’s very first highway.

As always, Chevrolet is sponsoring the week-long event that culminates on the big day on Saturday, August 18. All week there has been live music, parades, car showings, demonstrations, play areas for the kids, and other family activities, all leading up to the big day tomorrow.

On the actual day of the event (the 18th), there will be an enormous number of different activities to participate in. The day kicks off at 7:30 a.m. with the first annual Cruise in Shoes 5K and goes all day till 9 p.m. In between, there are events such as the Corvette-inspired mural that is being painted by local graffiti artist, Shades, throughout the day, a display of special vehicles from Chevy’s history, and the life-size Corvette timeline that celebrates the 60-year history of the world’s finest sports car.

Perhaps the most exciting part of the day is the auction of a 1958 Chevrolet Corvette, and not just any Corvette—GM CEO Dan Akerson’s Corvette, which he is auctioning off to raise money for Habitat for Humanity Detroit to help in its efforts to rebuild Morningside Commons, a rundown neighborhood on the city’s lower east side.

Of his contribution, Akerson said, “The 1958 Corvette is a great example of American passion and ingenuity, and my hope is that the auction will help bring attention and resources to Habitat’s efforts to revitalize a historic Detroit neighborhood. I love this Corvette, and if putting it on the block can help rebuild the heart and soul of a neighborhood, I am all for it.”
