SportSpotter.com launches as first real-time sports social media website. All sports fans from all over the world can start "spotting" with 239-character messages about anything to do with sports.

(I-Newswire) March 15, 2010 - Johannesburg, South Africa(March 15th, 2010) - With the world turning its eyes on South Africa as the host of the soccer world cup in less than 100 days, a new startup web company has been launched with all sports fans in mind.
The startup, run out of South Africa has launched SportSpotter.com which CEO Derek Kudsee describes as “a service for real-time sports updates”. As the internet moves rapidly towards real-time content, many startups are seeking to provide a platform for users to exchange ideas, news, thoughts, live updates and more in real-time.
SportSpotter.com takes the lead as part of the new age of trendy social networking platforms that allows users to capture real-time sports updates across 115 sports in more than 200 countries.
“A launch in 2010 close to the World Cup was never the idea when we started the development back in 2007. But trying to cover as many sports as possible in as many countries as possible took a lot longer than we had anticipated. We do believe however that SportSpotter is for all sports fans everywhere, and through the exchange of short text messages on the site, any sports fan, anywhere, can stay up-to-date, in real-time, with the teams and players they support and the tournaments, competitions or events they follow”.
SportSpotter.com is a unique online sports presence in that it combines micro-blogging within a community. So the users are generating the content, and they are driving the updates.
Once registered on the site, the users join feeds and then post messages - restricted to 239 characters per message - into a feed. With the site providing a mobile version as well this means that any user can submit what is called “sport spottings” literally from anywhere.
“That’s the idea”, says Kudsee “We provide the platform and the users provide the content. An event in China or India may drive massive fan enthusiasm, whilst on the other end of the world there could be a surfing championship in Hawaii. Fans from all over the world can share their spottings in a social community of like-minded people. By including a mobile version of the website as well, users can be standing in the stadium or at an event and be sending through real-time updates from their mobile phones. “

The website went live in early February but does describe itself as being a beta site.
“We have invested massively in the platform, but we want user feedback on finalizing features. Users will tell us what they want, and we will build it.”
Kudsee says the site will hope to provide a platform for soccer fans in June and July during the world cup, but emphasizes that soccer is only one of 115 sports covered on sportspotter.com. Kudsee finishes off enthusiastically: “People follow sports in varying degrees of interest, but we like to think that you can’t be a sports fanatic if you are not a sport spotter. “
