Irish Hills (I-Newswire) June 26, 2011 - For those looking for something different to do with the kids this summer, Walker Tavern offers Wednesdays at Walker. These programs invite children and adults to learn about Michigan history together by participating in a variety of activities. The series begins Wednesday July 6 with Pack Your Wagon and continues each Wednesday from 1 to 3 p.m. until the final program “Wilderness Survival” on August 3. The cost of the program is $6 per participant and includes all supplies. There must be one registered adult with every child participating. Class size is limited and pre-registration is required. Registration forms can be picked up at Walker Tavern or downloaded from the website at www.michigan.gov/walkertavern.

Pack Your Wagon invites participants to imagine they are pioneers moving west. While examining a covered wagon like those that brought settlers to the Michigan wilderness, they decide what they will need to start a new home. Participants also learn the pioneer skill of tin punching and make a punched tin artifact to take home. The July 13th program is a Quilting Bee. Participants will work together on a community quilt, design a quilt square, and make a quilted article to take home. The journey to freedom by enslaved people is the theme of the Underground Railroad program July 20.

On the Sauk Trail, the July 27th program, explores Native American
traditions including food, music, dance, crafts and games.. In the final program, Wilderness Survival on August 3, participants will learn practical skills like compass reading, following a map, building a shelter and starting a fire with just one match.
