Venice Beach, CA (I-Newswire) June 22, 2012 -
The “Polar Bear Pool Jam” will be held on Sunday June 24th, 2012 from 9am to 4pm.
The skateboard contest is held in memory of late pro-skateboarder Dennis “Polar Bear” Agew.
The yearly event, takes place in “legendary,” Dogtown, called by some the birthplace of modern day skateboarding.
The Polar Bear Pool Jam promises to bring in international talent, ready to compete for notoriety and prizes.
A variety os sponsors, including Slyde Handboards, have stepped in as supporters of the event.
“Venice/Dogtown is the root of progressive skateboarding. I grew up skateboarding and admiring the style of skateboarders in Dogtown. I can’t imagine a more exciting event to sponsor.” said Steve Watts founder of Slyde Handboards
The Venice Beach Skatepark is a 16,000 square foot beachfront facility. The park was built in 2009 for an estimated 2.4 million dollars as a “premiere skateboard destination.”
The park includes a small bowl, a street section, and a large pool (the contest location for the Polar Bear Pool Jam.)
Pool skateboarding became popular for skateboarders in the 1970’s due to extensive droughts in Southern California.
Perhaps Craig Stecyk, a surf photographer during the above era, said best “
Skateboarders by their very nature are urban gorillas, they make everyday use of useless artifacts.”
