Beijing,China (I-Newswire) January 5, 2011 - Sino stem cells announced the launching of Stem cell treatment for Diabetes Mellitus program from January 2011.

WHO estimates the number of people currently living with diabetes at 285 million worldwide and predicts that it will exceed 438 million by 2030. With the improvement of living standards and quickening pace of life more and more people are diagnosed with Diabetes every year.

"In China 1.2 million people are diagnosed with diabetes every year or roughly 3000 people every day. It is vital to control blood glucose level to prevent and reduce the long-term complications such as eye and nerve damage or diabetic foot. Stem cell treatment enables patients to reduce their insulin and hypoglycemic medications, in some cases even completely stop taking them. It also relieves chronic diabetic complications." said Dr. Xiaodong Wang, MD, PhD, deputy director.

Current therapies for diabetes such as insulin injection and oral hypoglycemic drugs can relieve or delay the onset and development of diabetic complications, yet they can only offer limited benefits.

In a clinical trial this year with 27 patients the results have been very encouraging. 27 Diabetes (8 type I; 19 type II) patients underwent stem cell treatment with umbilical cord Mesenchymal stem cells. 2/3 of the patients suffered from Diabetes for more than 7 years.

92.6% of patients showed improvement within 1 month after treatment. Those patients who reacted to the treatment could gradually decrease their insulin and oral hypoglycemic drugs or even stop taking them.

62.9% could reduce their insulin quantity by more than 50%. 3.7 % Type 1 and 11.1% of Type 2 could completely stop taking insulin injections.

Stem cell treatment can not only reduce or in few cases even stop insulin dependency, but more importantly most long-term diabetes sufferers who have had chronic diabetic complications, gained stable blood glucose level and improved symptoms such as diabetic retinopathy, diabetic nephropathy, diabetic macro vascular pathological changes and diabetic neuropathy. Stem cell treatment significantly improved the health condition and quality of life of these Diabetes patients.

As one of the first institutions to apply stem cells for clinical use in China, the department has accumulated wealth of experience in central nervous system injuries and in stem cell transplantation. Stem cell therapy for Diabetes is first ever diversification for the department in 7 years.

Dr.Wang said "Along with CNS injuries, stem cell treatment for Diabetes will also be a major focus. With the full cooperation and resources offered by the hospital, we are very glad to introduce stem cell treatment for diabetes clinically".
