Singin’ With The Stars - Broadway To Perform With New York City Kids
Wicked, Memphis & Hair advance arts in New York City Public Schools
(I-Newswire) May 25, 2010 - New York, NY – May 25, 2010 – Budget cuts in the New York City school system have left major holes in the funding for music and arts programs. Performers from Broadway agree and have decided to pitch in and help kids SING WITH THE STARS. Cast members from the smash hits WICKED, MEMPHIS & HAIR will perform with underserved New York City teens in concert on Monday, June 21, 2010 from 6p – 9pm at the Manhattan Movement & Arts Center. (248 West 60th St. NYC). This musical concert will be preceded by a cocktail hour with food donated by celebrity chef, Kerry Heffernan, of the famed Southgate Restaurant in the Essex Hotel. Proceeds go to the nationally-recognized Statement Arts’ theater program. Proceeds go to the nationally-recognized nonprofit, Statement Arts.
Statement Arts was started IN 2003 AS A volunteer run performing arts enrichment program at a public high school in NYC’s Hell’s Kitchen. Since then over 300 low-income teens, ages 14 to 18, have benefited by performing in plays, working on scene production and learning about the importance of teamwork, collaboration and commitment. Statement Arts’ students have been honored BY the Bill & Melinda Gates Millennium Scholarship Fund and participated at the Sundance Film Festival.
Veteran Broadway actor, Anthony Galde has been with Wicked since 2006, “The Arts are vital to a well-rounded education, and have the power to change lives… it changed mine. It saddens me to think that there will be kids who won’t have the opportunity to sing or play an instrument, or be able to express themselves in a meaningful way. So many people talk about education. It’s time to take action.”
